Litecoin uses the Scrypt proof-of-work algorithm, which was originally designed to be ASIC-resistant. However, modern Scrypt ASIC miners now dominate the network, making GPU and CPU mining unprofitable. To mine Litecoin competitively, you need a dedicated Scrypt ASIC miner.
Miners compete to solve cryptographic puzzles and add new blocks to the Litecoin blockchain. The target block time is 2.5 minutes (four times faster than Bitcoin), producing approximately 576 blocks per day. The current block reward is 6.25 LTC, which will halve again at block 3,360,000.
Since 2014, Litecoin supports merged mining (AuxPoW) with Dogecoin and other Scrypt-based coins. This means you can mine LTC and DOGE simultaneously at no extra computational cost, significantly boosting your effective revenue. Most major pools support Scrypt merge mining by default.
Solo mining Litecoin is impractical unless you control a significant portion of the network hashrate. Mining pools distribute rewards among participants proportional to their contributed hashrate. Consider factors like pool fees, payout methods (PPS vs PPLNS), minimum payouts, and whether the pool offers merged mining. Read our complete Litecoin mining guide for 2026.
Every 840,000 blocks, the Litecoin block reward is cut in half. The next halving will reduce the reward from 6.25 LTC to 3.125 LTC. Historically, halving events have been associated with price increases as supply issuance decreases. Track the halving countdown and learn about its market impact.
Mining profitability depends on several factors: your hardware hashrate and efficiency, electricity costs, the current network difficulty, LTC market price, and pool fees. Use the calculator above to estimate your potential returns with real-time data. Generally, miners with access to cheap electricity ($0.05-0.08/kWh) and efficient hardware see the best results.
