
Litecoin shares Bitcoin's code, curve, and correlation. We model four Bitcoin failure scenarios honestly: which ones LTC dodges, which it inherits, and why it's not the hedge you think it is.
There's a question Litecoin holders tend to ask quietly, usually around month fourteen of a bear market: if Bitcoin actually dies, does Litecoin inherit the throne? It's a comforting fantasy. It's also wrong in almost every scenario worth modeling, and the reasons why tell you more about what Litecoin really is than most bull-case content ever will.
We've already stress-tested the dependency chain in one direction on this site, asking what happens to Litecoin if Dogecoin dies. This piece runs the test the other way, and the picture is uglier. Dogecoin is a mining partner. Bitcoin is Litecoin's codebase, its narrative template, and its liquidity anchor, with a price correlation that has hovered around 0.88 for years (rolling correlation moves between roughly 0.6 and 0.95 depending on the window, so treat any single figure as an estimate). Stress-testing downward asks whether a limb survives. Stress-testing upward asks whether the organism does.
"Bitcoin fails" is four different claims wearing one coat, and lazy analysis treats them as interchangeable. They aren't.
Each one transmits to Litecoin through a different channel. Only one of them contains anything resembling good news.
Start with the boring, brutal math. Litecoin behaves like a high-beta claim on Bitcoin. When BTC drops, LTC drops more, and it has done so in every major drawdown on record. From the December 2017 peak to the December 2018 bottom, Bitcoin lost roughly 84%. Litecoin went from about $375 to about $23, call it 94%. Mt. Gox in 2014 dragged both down the same staircase. March 2020 was a synchronized faceplant. The pattern is not subtle.
So model Scenario A honestly: Bitcoin entering a genuine bid-to-zero spiral means the entire crypto market reprices, violently, and the smaller and less liquid the asset, the harder it falls. There is no realistic "flight to Litecoin." That trade has never happened in nearly fifteen years of crises and there's no mechanism for it to start now. Capital fleeing a dying Bitcoin goes to stablecoins, then fiat, then gold and treasuries. Nobody escapes a burning building by climbing into a smaller building made of the same wood.
One honest exception deserves a flag: in November and December 2022, while FTX was vaporizing and Bitcoin sat near $15,500, Litecoin actually rallied about 30% on halving anticipation. A real divergence. It lasted weeks, not years, and it happened because Bitcoin was wounded, not dying. Keep that distinction in your pocket; we'll need it later.
This is the interesting one, because it's the only scenario where the details of Litecoin's design actually matter. The question becomes: which Bitcoin failures does Litecoin inherit, and which does it dodge?
Litecoin uses the same digital signature scheme as Bitcoin: ECDSA over the secp256k1 curve. Identical. If a cryptographically relevant quantum computer, or some unexpected mathematical result, breaks Bitcoin's signatures, it breaks Litecoin's signatures just the same. Every exposed public key on both chains becomes spendable by the attacker. There is no scenario where quantum kills Bitcoin and Litecoin shrugs. They're wearing the same lock on the same door.
Consensus bugs travel the same road. When Bitcoin Core shipped CVE-2018-17144, the 2018 inflation bug that could have let miners print coins, Litecoin was exposed too, because Litecoin's code is Bitcoin's code with modifications. Shared ancestry means shared wounds. It has always meant that.
The famous difference is proof-of-work: Bitcoin mines with SHA-256, Litecoin with Scrypt. So a failure that lives purely at the mining layer, say a covert ASIC exploit or an attack specific to SHA-256 mining hardware, genuinely doesn't touch Litecoin's block production. That's real. It's the one clean dodge in this entire article.
But be careful with the popular version of this argument, because it overstates the insulation. Litecoin still uses SHA-256 everywhere except mining: transaction IDs, merkle trees, address derivation. Even Scrypt itself is built partly on SHA-256 internals (PBKDF2-HMAC-SHA256, plus Salsa20/8). A true cryptographic break of SHA-256, meaning practical collisions or preimages rather than a mining quirk, bleeds straight into Litecoin's plumbing. The honest summary: Litecoin dodges mining-layer SHA-256 failures and inherits everything else.
Here's the failure channel almost nobody prices in. Litecoin Core is not independently developed software; it's periodically rebased on Bitcoin Core, inheriting years of security fixes, performance work, and review from what is probably the most scrutinized open-source project in finance. And even with that upstream doing the heavy lifting, Litecoin's releases have historically lagged Bitcoin Core's by long stretches, sometimes years.
Now delete the upstream. A dead Bitcoin means no more Bitcoin Core releases to rebase on. Litecoin's development team, which for most of its history has been a handful of active maintainers (estimate, but you can verify the commit history on GitHub yourself), suddenly owns sole maintenance of hundreds of thousands of lines of security-critical C++. Forever. That's a bus-factor problem stapled to a funding problem stapled to a motivation problem, because most talented protocol engineers don't stick around an industry whose anchor asset just died.

The regulatory scenario needs little modeling because the transmission is so direct. Litecoin sits on exchanges as Bitcoin's plus-one. It's listed because Bitcoin made the category legal, liquid, and bankable. If major jurisdictions kill Bitcoin's fiat rails, they aren't carving out an exemption for a Bitcoin fork with faster blocks. If anything, history says altcoins get cut first: South Korean exchanges delisted LTC in June 2022 over MWEB's privacy features while Bitcoin kept trading. In a real crackdown, Litecoin doesn't inherit Bitcoin's rails. It inherits Bitcoin's obituary, minus the news coverage.
Slow irrelevance works the same way at a different speed. The LTC/BTC ratio has bled from roughly 0.05 at its 2013 highs to somewhere around 0.001 in recent years (estimate; check the long-term chart and prepare to wince). That's what nearly fifteen years of shared narrative looks like when you're the smaller party: Bitcoin's gravity held Litecoin's audience together even while it drained Litecoin's relative value. Remove the gravity and there's no independent audience left to hold. Payment-coin usage never grew into a standalone story; BitPay-style processor volumes, where LTC has genuinely ranked well among payment coins, are a rounding error against speculative flows.
Now the part a purely bearish take would skip. Litecoin has survived every Bitcoin crisis since 2011. Mt. Gox, the 2015 capitulation, the 2018 collapse, COVID, FTX. It survived its own founder, Charlie Lee, selling his entire stack near the December 2017 peak. Nearly fifteen years of continuous uptime through conditions that killed thousands of other projects is not nothing; it's one of the strongest survivorship records in the asset class.
But read that record carefully. Every one of those events was a wounded Bitcoin: prices down 80%, credibility shredded, obituaries published, network still producing blocks. A wounded Bitcoin has never killed Litecoin, and the late-2022 rally ahead of the 2023 halving shows LTC can even catch a bid while Bitcoin bleeds. A dead Bitcoin is a different animal entirely. It removes the reference asset every altcoin is priced against, the liquidity that market makers quote around, the upstream codebase, and the basic cultural premise that decentralized money is viable. Litecoin surviving Bitcoin's death would be like a moon surviving its planet's disappearance. Technically the rock persists. The orbit doesn't.
Put the scenarios side by side and the conclusion writes itself. In a confidence collapse, Litecoin falls harder. In a signature break, it shares the same fate. In a regulatory kill, it loses the same rails plus its listings first. In slow decay, it decays faster, as the ratio chart has demonstrated for a decade. The only Bitcoin failure Litecoin cleanly dodges is a narrow mining-layer exploit, and even then it would face the orphaned-codebase problem alone with a skeleton crew.
So say it plainly: Litecoin is not a Bitcoin hedge. It's leveraged Bitcoin exposure with extra steps. If you hold LTC because you like those extra steps, faster blocks, cheaper fees, MWEB, merged-mined Scrypt security, fine, that's a coherent position. But if any part of your thesis involves Litecoin as insurance against Bitcoin failing, replace it. Actual hedges are boring: cash, treasuries, gold, assets whose correlation to BTC rounds toward zero rather than toward one.

Both transmit to Litecoin at full strength because LTC shares Bitcoin's exchanges, banking relationships, and narrative. The dramatic scenarios make better headlines; the boring ones do the actual damage.
